How You Move, Matters: A Redefined Approach to Human Performance

How You Move, Matters: A Redefined Approach to Human Performance

Caryn Rollo

I am a Licensed, Board Certified Occupational Therapist, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, and Certified Personal Trainer, but more importantly I am an individual, just like you, who wants to feel good and live the best life possible.

It is through my own personal journey of illness which has led me to develop Peaked Health. From a young age, I have struggled with my weight, obscure illnesses both acute and chronic, surgeries, and injuries. I have also been the caregiver to several family members needing health and medical services. I have been to a variety of health professionals seeking help and guidance, often ending up disappointed, frustrated and occasionally, even worse off than when I started. It was through these experiences which propelled me forward in educating and immersing myself in learning about the workings of the human body in order to help myself and my loved ones. I have learned that we must become our own best advocate.

I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology- that provided me with the foundation of how the human mind works. I knew I needed more- that is when I pursued graduate school, and earned a Master of Science degree in Occupational Therapy. I chose Occupational Therapy because of its holistic perspective on health, wellness and illness. Occupational Therapy is a medical profession, whose motto is helping others “Live Life to its Fullest”, working through illness and injury and optimizing function. Occupational Therapy provided me with the medical background of how the mind and body are connected, and in-depth knowledge of physical (anatomical, physiological and neurological), psychological and social/emotional factors that play a role in a person's health and wellness.

Through my education and experience, I have found that movement- in every sense of the word- truly is medicine. Exercise has always been a staple in my life- but it wasn’t until I began consistently strength training with my now husband and business partner Dan, when my life completely changed.

The positive effects movement and resistance training has on every body system is undeniable. Further, my skills as a rehabilitative medical professional were enhanced 10 fold. It became more apparent that rehab and fitness were really both one and the same- they just begin on different parts of the continuum. That is when I began furthering my education within the fitness realm.

It all came full circle for me when day in and day out, I witnessed the current state of both our fitness and rehab industries implementing, marketing and perpetuating exaggerated concepts and false claims, which are doing more harm than good. The quantity over quality mentality and cookie cutter treatment and fitness approaches don't work, and are definitely not sustainable. It became more and more apparent that I just viewed things through a completely different lens…and I was the minority.

I was extremely saddened by the “health-care” services I saw people receiving as well as hearing about others' overall negative experiences. I also witnessed fellow health professionals on the brink of burnout, unhealthy and in pain. I once knew these struggles, but I also came to know that it doesn’t have to be, or stay that way. I made a decision that I was no longer going to participate in the “sick-care” model of practice; I was determined to find a way to truly help others- even if that meant just one person at a time. That is when Peaked Health was born.
